Special ossasion spending

Dassera and Diwali come once a year and so do birthdays and anniversaries . During dassera and diwali, there is a tradition to buy gold. Do you follow the same tradition here? I know of some friends, who do. Or are you like me πŸ™‚ who doesn’t follow these? With all the latest buzz about “FDIC insured” money, I am thinking would it be a good idea to keep buying such things on these special occasions and make your future insured πŸ™‚ Ofcourse one needs to worry about the safe storage of such things as well but that is outside the scope of this discussion. And yes one doesn’t need to club it with festivals but can do the same on birthdays, anniversaries etc. Do you do something similar on kids birthdays, anniversaries ?

  1. Finally Bhavini got the time to write something :-).

I know that Nayan uncle (Jayesh’s father) believes strongly in gold. And that will work out well in situations like we have right now. So I can see Jayesh smiling. πŸ™‚

As far as buying something on special occasions, we dont believe in that and have not done it till now.

  2. Gold up by 90$ today. Wish I had listened to Nayan uncle.

Maybe Jayesh is not smiling that much. Just a little. πŸ™‚

  3. Today the following conversation will take place in every kutchi home in bay area.

Wife: “Look, I was telling you to buy some gold for me, instead of putting money in stock” πŸ™‚

  4. I already had that conversation today in the morning before leaving for work:-)

  5. Gold has come down from 1200 to 750 and today it went 90 dollars up….Speculators are driving up the prices just like the prices of gas and other commodities went up. As soon as the US govt puts the house in order (maybe it may take some time) dollar will start rising as the interest rates will go up and the first thing to go down will be GOLD….So if you want to make some jewelry its okay…but for investment I will advice you to wait till this mess/dust settles down….

  6. The previous GOLD 2 cents were from me….:)

  7. Instead of buying gold you could also buy an ETF like GLD and trade. Same goes for oil (USO). They do have a different tax treatment on gains (treated as partnership).

  8. Wouldn’t you rather buy the NEXT Google or Facebook that can triple in a matter of a couple of years

  9. In all these year, only once when I was in 4th or 5th grade we got Silver chain on Deshera. Otherwise not bought gold on festive or personal celebration day. I donÒ€ℒt follow tradition but believe in investing in this form but lack in implementation πŸ™‚ Relatives often suggest that we should buy something during our India trip. I am not sure if it will insure ur future but could surely make noticeable dent when time comes.

  10. My friend still believes in it also. She will buy something small every year. We do not believe in it till now.

  11. No i wouldn’t trust google or any other stock as a long term gain(10+ yrs down the lane). Those “maybe” good only for short term πŸ™‚
