Low Gas Stories

The dreaded orange light comes up in your car indicating low gas. What do you do next?

How much mileage do you try to extract before heading to the gas station?

Have any interesting “low-gas” stories to share with the rest of the group? Did the “low-gas” ever convert to “no-gas”? Does the Orange Light ever turn Red ? (When there is not a single drop of gas in the car).

  1. You get home as soon as you can and hand over the car keys to your spouse, tell him/her you are in a merry mood which is why you feel like exchanging cars for a day. Problem solved !!
    Excerpt from real life!

  2. Jeegar dude, even better story — Year: early 2000’s; Gallon of Gas: $2; Tune-up: $150. TAKING YOUR in-laws, your honey, trunk full of their luggage in the car, driving UP the hill, with the gas gage below the E and the orange light turned red —- PRICELESSS!!!!!! There are somethings money can’t buy.

  3. So I take it that the orange light does turn red. I never had the guts to find out. 🙂

  4. There’s a whole website dedicated to this situation. At the expense of being termed as a female chauvinist, I think men tend to test this limit more than women. 🙂

  5. And do note the top story on that website – Don’t use your reserve fuel,it protects your pump.

  6. And then next day after the car exchange Jeegar is all orange and red

  7. I usually drive 20-25 miles after the light comes on. 🙂

  8. Hmm… Maybe that’s the reason why the accord got hosed before its time ;).
In any case, you are not alone. Since me and Rohit have exchanged cars, I now worry about my dear Acura.

  9. With the Orange light ON, it is possible that you may stall if going uphill/downhill (tilting the car changes the fuel level in the tank?). Has happened to a friend. He parked on an inclined street, went somewhere and came back to find the car does not start. Letting it slide on a level road and start – the car comes back to life, and straight to gas station 🙂

  10. Had a friend drive down the car in neutral all the way – when the gas got over – downhill from Yosemite to the nearest town. however had to push it a way on level street once in the town

  11. I had “low-gas” convert to “no-gas” once in TN. My car was low on gas and I just forgot about it. I kept driving until it just died on me on the interstate. That time, I had no cell phone. So I had to hang a white cloth on the window to indicate I needed help (they dont have that concept here?). Waited for 45 min before a car came. I took a ride to the next exit. Called my friend. Waited another hour for him to arrive. After all this ordeal, do you think I will ever let it run on ‘low-gas’ again ? 🙂

  12. Have a car that displays how far the car can go with the gas in the tank and current driving conditions. A few times I’ve driven my car to the gas station with zero reading on my display. It was as thrilling as a roller coaster ride.
