Time to start discussion on Camping Snacks and Food.
Searching for options for Sat night dinner and Sun Lunch. (Previous years we have had one of Pav Bhaji, Usal Pav, Tacos for dinner and Thepalas, Sandwich for Lunch). Do we have any different suggestions this year ?
If any suggestions for any other Camping food including snacks, juices, etc please put it down here.
Sat / Sun breakfast will probably include the same menu (bread, bagels, etc) unless someone suggests anything radically different.
Ok i will bite !!! How about picking up drive in falafel for dinner? Can be picked up by the folks reaching there on Saturday. They can give everything seperately, we just assemble own falafel on site. Or if we just want to get balls and sauces from them and get rest pita, salad ourselves.
Not a bad idea. What do the others think? Another idea is Taco-Bhel. Recipe is here
Ragada Pattie. Can either completely ordered from outside. or Just like usal Pav, few folks can prepare ragda from home(quick & easy) and can order aloo tiki/patties from outside.
For Ragda Pattice Hash Brown patties also work very well. We have tried this earlier for few outings and also when people went camping in Boston they would choose this option.
If falafel is picked up by early afternoon, I think it will taste too dry and cold for dinner. Something that can be warmed up like pav bhaji or ragda patties will be a better option specially in cold weather.
We can go for Fajitas again. Other than chopping veges nothing much to cook, with some spanish rice on the side.
Falafel sounds like a good option for Lunch.
Chhole for dinner (best with Pav Bhaji’s bread, if all r comfortable otherwise parathas/rotis can be ordered). Rice &/or yogurt can serve as a side.
Order food from Shirly ;). Always looking forward to eating her yummy food. Unfortunately never make up to her headcount criteria.
Hot ragda patties or usal pav sounds good in cold weather or even fajitas is not abad idea.
Keeping in mind the “hot food” for dinner logic, Ragda pattice or Chole sounds like a good option.
Any idea who prepares good pattice in the bay area?
Honey, if you are talking about Falafel for Sunday lunch, will the falafels and other material last that long?
For Sunday lunch (at the beach) I suggest Thepalas (since they are no hassle) and Choondo and Mango Ras.
Prashant,
Rajjot’s(sunnyvale) aloo tikki’s are good. Shirley should be making it as well 🙂 On a second thought – can make it Samosa Chhole/Ragda(quick to cook).
Rajjot’s samosa’s are good too.
Shirley’s samosas and aloo tikki’s are mouth-watering and they come with chole I think. The samosas run about 75 cents a piece (or used to atleast), but are quite filling.
Have I managed to sell you this idea yet or do I need to provide testimonials of satisfied customers 😉
I think samosas will become soft by dinner time. They will be also be bulkier than Tikki.
Ameeta, Leena and Sneha can you three find out aloo tikki (pattice) prices from Rajjot/Shirley/Milan and post it here. (by tomorrow if possible). Also find out how much they will charge to prepare Ragda.
You can mention quantity for 50 adults.
Thanks a lot for your help. 🙂
Also there are many home based women like Komal Ben in Sunnyvale, someone in Milpitas…Sejal knows her name who cna make aloo pattice and give us….we shall enquire about them also could be they turn out to be cheaper.
we will also need chutneys for ragda paatice…..dont forget that
Ameeta, Sneha, Leena please also find out the Samosa prices too. thanks.
For Sunday lunch, Rass on beach is not totally hassel free. One needs to open tins, most likely dilute with milk/water. Last time we had thepla/pickle/dahi. Is there other option then Thepla? Getting x100 thepla made from typically single/2 person team seems lot of effort for them. I get a small guilt factor when I go for pick up.
Milan will charge $4 for Ragda Pattice per plate that includes 2 pattice some ragda, onions and chutneys.
If we order their regular size pattice it would be 70 cents per pattice and they can do 2 for a $1 but that would be slightly smaller.
Komal Ben(known as Manju ben tiffin) in Sunnyvale will charge about $1 for 2 pattice and $1 for one plate ragda.
Manju Ben can give us sample over the weekend for Milan we need to try their regular ragda pattice in the restaurant
You get excellent vegetable pattice in Costco. They are awesome. You can just warm them on the tava and have with ketchup or make vegetable burgers.
Rajjot charges $1 per tikki or pattice. It comes with chutney and onion. Chhole or ragda is $70 for a big tray. Samosas are 50 cents each.
Badal Restaurant in Cupertino will charge 75 cents for Tikki if we order more than 100 pcs otherwise it’s 99 c.
This is what Shirly charges : 70 cents for 1 samosa and 70 cents for 1 alu tikki.
If you order 1 samosa, 1 alu tikki and ragda, it will be $2.50 per person.
Shirly is on vacation till 16th june, so we will have to place the order on 17th. But she said its doable for 20th.
oh, and alu tikki comes with chutney.
Prashant, if falafel passes as one of the lunch options, it can be doable by getting the balls as late as we can on Sat and keeping it cool. Sunday morning lil before lunch, it can be slightly heated/steamed. They will stay nice. Other materials are not much prob.
When we’re talking about samosa, tikki etc., just wondering about arrangements for folks who eat Jain food?
Do these ladies also take an order for that or we’re thinking of making kacha kela pattie ourselves?
Good point honey about the jain food. Also did you ladies check about the time they will be able to give the food on Saturday morning?
If i were to come for Camping this year – i would have tried to make a case for Puran Puri – But maybe next year 🙂 Just kidding
Don’t worry Bhavesh, your wish will come true in India for sure 🙂
Bhavesh, You can surely make arrangements & place order for us to recieve piping hot Puran Puri at camping.
In case of raggada Patties for Jain pattie, I doubt Rajjot or Shirly will do it. Girls can surely inquire. At this point we know of 5/6 people for Jain food. Other option is to make Jain pattie at home or check with Milan/Hemprabha aunty for Jain pattie.
Sure let me know if you decide on puran puri.
The lady in milpitas is Jayshree ben that Sneha mentioned & she runs a chat corner on Sat & Sun in Sugandh India Imports.Have tried her chat & also other food. She makes good food.
She will charge $3.50 for 1 plate of ragda pattice (2 Pattice, ragda, chutney’s & onion), $1.00 for 2 pc of samosas & 5 Methi Theplas for $2.00 & her theplas are made of wheat,Channa & bajri flour.
Milan can prepare Jain Ragda Pattice for $4/50/plate or 70 cent/pattie. Pick up time can be 10am Sat. Jain food can be prepared on sat. morning itself. Hemprabha aunty is not available to take order.
Milan charges $ 1.00 for 1 thepla
