Which are the restaurants which are suited for Jains. Some of the visitor parents are often Jain or have reservations about eating at places which serve Non-Veg also.
Over the weekend I was speaking with Rupesh and he mentioned 3 restaurants that are suited for Jains.
1) Udipi – Rupesh said that the sambar and chutney dont contain onion, garlic, etc and hence are jain.
2) Milan in Milpitas
3) Chaat Paradise in Mountain View
Any other restaurants that the pure Jains among us can suggest?
Thanks Prashant…this week we have been looking around for some Jain options…and pinged Nitul for a comprehensive list….Nitul says he found Jain food at My Thai, Freemont
Kokila’s Kitchen at homestead.
As such if you go to any indian restuarant and ask them to prepare shabji w/o onion garlic they prepare it for you.
We have been to Myth restuarant in San Jose and they prepared jain punjabi sabji for us.
Most of the time we go to Taco Bell and most of items are Jain except for Buritto and not completely sure about Mexican Pizza. We generally have Gorditta’s, Chalupa, Crunch Wrap, Taco Feista Salad, Nachos
And also as Sneha mentioned we had ordered a dish in My Thai which was Jain and was awesome, unfortunately i dont remember the name :(((
You can get jain food at Passage to India- Bakery & fine dining, Dosa place – Santa Clara (sambar & chtney is jain). Das Prakash – santa clara. we also got jain food at Amber ( need to ask them to make without pateto, onion & garlic). We also had couple of dishes at Zeni’s at Saratoga
Taco Bell is a good option for jains but you just ask them to give you without cheese.
Lulai garden in Mc Carthy is another place where you get chinese food . They do not use onion, garlic and potatoes. They use eggs in some items but they have written it very clearly which items have eggs. Regarding carrots and other root vegetables you might have to talk to them . We used to like their food very much but last couple of times we were in mood of experimentation 🙂 to try out new dish and were disappointed . I wish I could remember what dishes I ate which we liked before.
Also Chicago Pizza serves soy cheese and you can decide your jain toppings.
If you arte in San Francisco there are several vegan places , might have to check about how they might customize to jain . One good one that I know is Herbivore .
Ameeta Zeni is what kind of cuisine. Sounds interesting
Have heard that komala vilas also caters to Jain crowd. Neelam Zeni is an ethiopian cuisine.
We really like Zeni….so very indian food the dal, cabbage sabzi, collards( I never would have eaten collard otherwise)
Ceicro’s Pizza Near Bollinger n Lawrence can make Jain Pizza too….u need to get ur own cheese…Amit Nitul n Jeegar had been once and they knew what Jain Pizza was…….impressiveTheir pizzas are just awesome
Manderian Gourmet at san jose serves Jain foood, you can ask then to pre-pare any dish without onion garlic.
India Chaat House next to Jain Temple offers Jain food. Good for take out.
Any suggestion for 100% vegg Indian place in SF. Dosa place is mix 🙁
Greens Restaurant at Fort Mason Center-SF,is 100% veg.
Have heard good reviews about the place but haven’t got a chance to try it out ourselves. I don’t think though, one would get much of desi stuff there.
Smita, Greens restuarant is really good that was heard too. They are using their own farms vegetables. We did got chance to eat there because we went without reservation. They have really nice bay view.
Green’s is definitely awesome, highly recommended. However, it is not Indian food which is what Dimple wanted. I am not aware of any pure veg Indian place in the city. Other vegetarian places in SF are Herbivore (all cuisines), Cha-ya (vegan Japanese place; highly recommended), Millenium (never been there, but heard it is good).
Herbivore in Mission is popular among vegans. It is non-Indian. Google “Vegan Restaurants” in San Francisco. 🙂 – Rohit
Yup… I also found many vegan places but their menu doesn’t interest parents.
DeeDee’s in Mountain View can make Jain dishes (they had closed down restaurant as they were moving to a new place, not sure if they have reopened or not).
In SF:
Greens is excellent and they had prepared a dish for us that didn’t have potatoes/onion/garlic. They are quite accomodating. Reservations recommened. If in hurry pick up their take-out sandwiches.
Herbivore is small deli style restaurant. Food was good.
Alive (raw food vegan) is good too.
Millenium’s food is decent but prices are outrageous (not worth in my opinion).
Medicine Eat Station (Japanese) is good too. Used to be 100% veg with no onion/garlic. But they now serve seafood too but still have lots of veg options.
MaggieMudd is good place veg/vegan ice-creams
http://www.bayareaveg.com is an excellent resource for veg/vegan dining in Bay Area. They list couple of 100% indian restaurant in the city but reviews are mixed.
Sneha, I agree Zeni is the best ethiopian restaurant in South Bay. Other good ethiopian restaurant are Gojo and Mudai, both near downtown in SJ.
Ethiopian is Honey’s fav cuisine other than Indian. So we go to these places quite often 🙂
Maybe Honey is misunderstanding Ethopian Cuisine to be Utopian Cuisine. 🙂
Its an irony in a way. Ethopia is a country in Africa and Utopia is a fantasy perfect non-existent place.
Deedee’s has moved to SantaClara
341 Lafayette St, Suite 101 Santa Clara

Wow.. I am sure that makes JBJS very happy since it comes closer.
Chaat Bhavan at fremont has a selected menu for jain food
I believe Banana Leaf in Milpitas also makes Jain food on demand.
Any vegan restaurant can make jain dish like vegetarian house in san jose, loving hut in milpitas and san francisco and there is also a mexican vegan restaurant in san francisco gracias madre never tried
The other two are really good and we go often.
Anand Bhavan in Sunnyvale is south indian restaurant which has Jain Sambhar and is also Pure veg restaurant.
Arre Nitul Swati’s Kitchen has the best Jain Food that I’ve had 🙂 Kahin air jaani ki kya zaroorat hai
