SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara police failed to find an armed robber Friday night, Santa Clara police told NBC11 Friday. They gave the all clear around 9:30 p.m.
People who live in the Archstone Apartments at 1650 Hope Drive were told to stay in doors all evening and people returning home were not allowed in the complex until the all clear was given late Friday evening.
Police said they continued to look for the robber throughout the night.
Police told NBC11’s George Kiriyama that there was an armed robbery at the Trio Market off Lafayette Street Friday afternoon just before 4 p.m.
Police said they recovered one weapon, but said the robber apparently had another one.
Police describe the robber as an African-American, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, a blue cap, blue jeans and he has a large and distinctive Afro hairstyle.
Police considered the robber armed and dangerous.
The San Jose Mercury News reported that police had a plan in place to call a Special Response Team to help in the investigation. That group includes a team of sharpshooters and negotiators who could make contact with the suspect if the suspect was located.
People who live in the Rivermark neighborhood sent a message to each other explaining that they had been advised to return to their homes and stay inside late Friday afternoon.
The residents said they had been told not to congregate or stay in Live Oak Park.
Police told members of the Rivermark community that they were looking for the gunman.
Rivermark residents reported seeing Sunnyvale police with rifles at about 4:40 p.m. Friday.
Police set up a command post site in the Sun Microsystems parking lot on Agnew Avenue.
Helicopters circled over the Rivermark area for much of Friday evening.
