Referring to Parents : Tu vs Aain

As the current poll on KV shows, most of us refer to Moms as “Tu” (more informal way) and Dads as “Aain” (a more formal way).

Now try to remember what your parents call your grandparents.

In my case both my father and mother used to refer to their parents as “Aain”.

How did the switch happen from “Aain” to “Tu” for Mummy for the current generation ? What are you currently teaching your kids to call you? 🙂

Of course Kairavi is still small and she refers to both Dimple and me in the “Tu” manner. But lets see in the future what happens 🙂

  1. Does the use of Tu for our moms means that we are more comfortable (informal) with our moms than they were with their moms?

  2. Typically we also address our in-laws as Aain too. So it’s only our mom who gets address as “Tu”.
In Prashant’s case his father calls pretty much everyone as “Aain”.

  3. One of our friends calls his father “tu”. At first I thought he is joking. I was really surprised too!
Have not known anybody else who calls his/her father “tu”.

  4. Is he a maharashtrian friend?

  5. No, a Kutchi friend.

  6. Applying this to spouses most of us address our spouse as “Tu”. However some KV male spouses do get addressed as “Aain” by their better halves. I dont think I know of instance in KV wherein the better half got addressed as “Aain” or “Tammain”.

  7. Amita calls S2 “Tammain”.

  8. Amisha I know both Sanjay Galas get addressed as Aain or Tammain. I meant the I dont know of any reverse case where the female gets addressed as “Aain” or “Tammain”.

  9. Even Nitul gets addressed as “Tammain”

  10. S2 and Nitul both speak gujarati with their better half and both get addressed as “TAME”

So now KV Husbands know what they need to do to get addressed as “TAME” 🙂

  11. Both the Parents as Tammein
