Spring Picnic 2012 : Dates & Venue Options

April is typically the month for KV Spring picnic. Since this year pathshala is every sunday now, was thinking if Saturday would be an option this year for the spring picnic. But after talking to some Junior shala parents, it seems we can do picnic on 2nd/4th Sunday.
With schools off for spring break in April and 6-8 April being Mahavir Jayanti and Diksha ceremony in temple, we are left with 22nd April as the only Sunday picnic day for April. 13th May is another option if we want to do it in May. If concerns about either dates, please respond 🙂
Also please post any venues for the picnic, Ed Levin County Park could be one of the options as it is central to most folks and will be closer for pathshala parents. But we have not repeated a venue yet, so would be good to look for newer parks.
Newcomers, the spring Picnic is a potluck kind of picnic where one brings food for themselves + little bit more to share. And of course a day full of games and fun as well.

  1. Venue has been repeated just once (in our initial years). Rest of the time we have been successful in finding interesting parks where kids and adults can have fun alike. Here is a list of venues that Spring Picnic has been held in since 2003. Having spring picnic in new venues allows us to explore new parks. This will also be a landmark year for KV Spring Picnic since it will be the 10th KV Spring Picnic.

2003 –> Vasona Park, Los Gatos
2004 –> Vasona Park, Los Gatos
2005 –> Kelly Park, San Jose
2006 –> Oak Meadows Park, Los Gatos
2007 –> Ed Levin County Park, Milpitas
2008 -> Emma Prush Farm, San Jose
2009 -> John Morgan Park, Campbell
2010 -> Almaden Lake Park, San Jose
2011 -> Calabazas Park, San Jose

  2. As you can see from above list, Cupertino, Mountain View, Fremont, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara etc have had no love from KV for Spring Picnics. So maybe a criteria could be to choose a city in which Spring Picnic has not been held before. 🙂

  3. Fine with both dates Apr 22 as well as May 13

  4. Fine with both dates.

  5. I cannot make it 22 . We can make it on 15 May

  6. both dates are fine

  7. The park in Redwood city / woodside where we went hiking once last year also looked good, with lots of space to play, volley ball courts etc as well….

  8. April 22…. 13 is not a lucky number… so no May 13 :)[ we are not in town]

  9. Don’t be so Superstitious and believe 13 is unlucky number 🙂

  10. Minati,
That was Huddart county park where went hiking last year. Don’t recollect seeing play structures there, and didn’t find it on the website as well, but if you do or find some pictures please post here.

  11. Also any reviews of Coyote Point Rec Area (In San Mateo County) for KV Spring Picnic, I think some of the folks have been here.

  12. I think if the picnic is after Pathshala it cannot be that far from the temple in San Mateo. Would like to request close to the temple.

  13. Santa teresa county park (alamaden)is a grassy park with vast rolling hills and known for wild flower display in spring. They have a reserveable picnic area for up to 100 people. I don’t know if they have a play area though a multitude of kid friendly hikes are possible.

  14. We have not had Spring Picnic in Elizabeth park in Fremont 🙂 🙂

  15. San Ramon Central Park, Alcosta Boulevard, San Ramon, CA

  16. Poonam,
Do you know if Cunningham Park has a play structure? From the San Jose city website it doesn’t seem that there is a play structure there.

    Nilesh,
San Ramon Central Park looks huge and nice. It has all the features that we usually look for. Are the features (skate park, basket ball etc) walking distance from picnic tables or need to drive from one thing to another since the park looks quite big.

  17. Hello Bhavini

They do not have play structure for kids currently.
they have lake, and open meadows………
Adjacent is skate park and raging water.

how about delvalle lake in livermore..

  18. @Bhavini- We have not been to the park and have heard from friends its a very good park. We do not know the distance of the skate park, basket ball etc from the picnic tables.

  19. Thanks Poonam & Nilesh for the response.
Both Fair Oaks Park and Lakewood Park in Sunnyvale also look nice and have basketball courts, play structure, skate park, volleyball area in one of them.

  20. What about Santa Terassa County Park that Kalpendu has mentioned?

  21. From the map there is no play structure at Santa Teresa County Park either. Plus it will be same distance as San Mateo from JCNC.

  22. Then there is cuesta park in Mountain view. The park has a nice multi-age play area, tennis courts and a reservable picnic area that can hold quite a large crowd and a volley ball court right next to the picnic area. There are bike lanes all accross the park and plenty of open, grassy slopes to frolic and run around. No baseball field so cricket wont be an option though. There may be a reservation fee, will try to find out.

  23. Based on all the considerations and inputs, I am narrowing down to these two parks – Cuesta Park in Mountain View (Near El Camino Hospital) & Lakewood Park in Sunnyvale (Lawrence & very close from 101/237). Will finalize the location after talking to few folks. Both parks have play structures, lawn and bike path. Cuesta has Bocce Ball play area, volley ball, tennis courts. Lakewood has volley ball, basket ball, water play area (I was surprised to see water play on today), small skateboard ramp/rink and handball court.

  24. Cuesta Park has reservation charges. They also have very nice grills.
    Its a very nice Park.

  25. Our spring picnic will be @ Lakewood Park in Sunnyvale on April 22nd. Details posted at the event page.
