Environmental Damage and Your contribution to lessen it

Global warming is in news this year and for all the right reasons. What kind of world do we want to leave for our children? A world in which trees are scarce, natural resources are all but gone, extreme weather ?

Awareness about how to reduce our footprint on the environment is gathering steam.
We are all aware that some habits in the United States are not the most favorable to the environment.

What kind of things are you doing to reduce your impact on the environment?

Maybe others who are not doing it can start doing so upon reading your contribution.

  1. Have been thinking about taking cloth bags to grocery stores(reduce usage of plastic bags). But forget everytime when i start from home. It will happen soon now :).

  2. More working from home 😉

  3. Dimple correctly pointed out yesterday that “Look whos talking” :-). While its true that I have not given much thought to environment recently, I do plan to take corrective action.

What better way than to have KV as witness and no better motivation than having to stand by your word in front of so many people.

  4. Our office has a small garbage bin for each cube and it gets cleaned every day. Even if there is a little kachra the plastic bag gets changed every day.

If I have small garbage only then I go and deposit it in the bigger garbage bin in the break room. So that the janitor wont have to replace the plastic bag on the one in my cube.

  5. Nothing special, I try to follow simple & known rules. Conserve energy, water. Instead of setting sprinkler to Auto, I run them manually as per need basis in fall/winter/spring. Recycle as much as possible. If I buy single item from the store then skip the bag. Collect all plastic bag and drop them at Walmart/grocery store for recycle.

  6. During our last years Camping, we KV’s conserved good number of paper glasses by adopting to our personal reusable glasses. Let’s aim to repeat that for upcoming picnic/camping and other events.

  7. I recently in Parade:

Dishwaher uses 20 to 30 gallons of water so run fully loaded dishwashers only.
Remove chargers from the socket if not charging anything, it also consumes energy.

There is a song that Barney sings in his show : “We never let the water run.”
(running water wastes 2 to 3 gallons of water in a minute: read in Parade magazine)
I try not to keep water running if I am not using it.

So no sprinklers on Sat 😉

  8. Take a spoon from home for lunch…instead of getting a plastic spoon everyday from cafe…..while brushing/shaving dont let the tap running……

  9. Avoid using aerosol sprays. Some people are obsessed with spraying stuff on their clothes, laundry, rugs, carpets, sofas,.. you name it… and the biggest Killer.. perfumes and hair sprays.
These are some of the biggest culprits for depleting ozone and promoting global warming.

Also, save paper. Recycle. I keep a basket in my office to dump used paper. Even the wee little bit of paper goes in here after having scribbled on every corner of an envelope. This basket then meets its brethren in the recycle bin.

  10. Recently found out that you can put white grocery bags in your recycle bin with other plastic & Paper. Now on no need to collect them and remember to take along to deposite in grocery store/walmart recycle bins.
