Humidifiers : Any experience ?

Winter is here and with it has brought dry skin and cold weather. With the heaters on in the home, the humidity is still lower.

I have been doing some R&D on humidifiers and seems like Humidifiers help you feel warmer also since more the humidity the less cold you will feel. They also help reduce dry skin, help with breathing easily, and ease irritation of coughs and sore throats. Recommended Relative Humidity for good comfort is recommended at 45-50%.

Anyone have any experience with humidifiers and how well they work? If you have a humidifier which one do you have ?

By the way, here is a good explanation on Humidifiers and Relative Humidity.

  1. we have Vicks cool mist humidifier. We are satisfied with it, though we do not use it much 🙂

  2. We also use vicks cool mist one, it’s used every night in winters, a timer switches it off at sometime in the night :). One needs to be little precautious with use of humidifiers as extra moisture can cause mold. This humidifier provides lot of mist, so Mr.J keeps plastic mat below and a small cloth on the humidifies itself to reduce the mist. Don’t know if it makes the room feel warmer, but definitely reduces the soreness of throat or dry throat at night. For more questions please consult, u know whom 🙂

  3. I don’t think it makes the room warmer but instead it feels cool. We also keep the outlet for air (on the humidifier) not facing the children (instead of putting the cloth like bhavini said)

  4. Thanks for the info. I was also planning to buy the Vicks one (1.2 gallon). On Amazon it sells for 28$ but I will try at some local store so that it can be returned if faulty.

By the way, The product review page on amazon has reviews on this product and in that some people have tips about how to take care of a humidifier (taking filter out to dry once a week, etc)

  5. In addition to the mold that too much humidity can cause, it can also actually make you sick. A humidifier with a timer, like the one Bhavini has or one which has a ‘thermostat’ for detecting humidity is good. Also, although doctors recommend cold mist humidifiers, a warm mist is equally good. Only thing is, with a warm mist humidifier, you can get more mold.
