Reva – the electric Car (India)

We had gone to Bangalore on a short visit and while there we got to ride in a Reva (India’s first electric car). One of our cousins has bought a used one and we rode in that for a day around the city.

Now this car is really really small. Its a 2 door hatchback. Its outside dimensions are :
Length : 2638 mm (8.8 feet)
Width : 1324 mm (4.4 feet)
Height : 1510 mm (5 feet)

Its meant for 2 adults and 2 minors. But we were travelling 3 adults and 1 teen and 2 minors. :-).

Its supposed to be very less in maintenance costs since it has less moving parts. Its costs about 40 paise for a km compared to 4 Rs for a km for a petrol vehicle.

After coming home we just used to plug it in and it used to recharge within 5 hours. With a full charge you can travel about 60 to 70 km and the top speed is about 65 km/hr.

So as such its a true city car. It can be parked in the smallest of spaces. It did use to cramp me up for room because of my height and I was hitting the side handle on roof every now and then. But nevertheless it was fun to travel in.

  1. I tried my hands on Reva, it is very smooth. To match the size of car, steering wheel is small too. To make certain turn you end up rotating it more then 275deg. If you are in the back seat, you won’t hear engine start or left/right blinker noise. When a/c is started at high then horn volume will go down. May be they can come up with convertible to accommodate taller folks. It is good alternative to two-wheelers for short, in-town commutes. It was fun traveling in Reva.

  2. Updated the end of the post with the photo of the actual Reva that we travelled in.
