Anyone have experience with failed smog test ?

Has anyone played with reseting their "Check Engine Light" due to a failed Catalytic Converter ?

Has anyone tried finding an after market catalytic converter and convincing the repair shop to install it for them ?

Anyone paid the full price for getting a new  catalytic converter  installed ?

  1. I think i paid the price for a catalytic convertor. Let me look up my records and post back.

  2. I know we all have our never dying Hondas & Toyotas, but dang hasn’t anyone had any experience with this !!!

  3. Well I just got mine done. If you fail your smog test or your Engine light comes on, it is likely that your catalytic converter (CAT) has given up on you. Emission laws in CA are very stringent and getting a CA legal CAT on most models can cost you anything between $1k-$2k. God forbid, but if this happens to you try the following:

1] CA law requires the dealer to fix your CAT problem within a 80K mile/8 yr warranty period. Some latest models (Camry/Prius,etc) have a 150K mile warranty. My dealer didn’t inform me about this when my car was at 79K miles. Conveniently I was told about this when my car was at 83K miles. So question your dealer.

2] If you have dragged your valiant and loyal horse over 101 for more than a decade, chances are the above doesn’t apply to you. Go see a muffler service guy. I would recommend Joe’s Muffler in Santa Clara (408-748-0598). He welded a cheaper CAT onto my car’s exhaust for only $250 (including the CAT). I couldn’t get anyone else to do this for me under $500. My car is running like new and he gives a 50K mile warranty.

I spent a lot of time researching this so hoping it comes handy to others. Not that I want your CAT to die on you 🙂
