– I did train for hal marathon
– You can register for half, and once half marathon is done (Aug timeframe), you can decide if you want to go for full
– Two runs on weekday and one on Saturday
– For weekday runs, there are several options. I chose Sunnyvale-evening last year.
– For weekend run all Asha runners meet at common trail. The location changes every week though.
Sandeep,
Let me shoot some more questions:
– When does the training begin?
– How long are the weekday and weekend sessions?
– At what point in training does the actual running begin on weekdays?
– Can you elaborate on fund raising goals?
– What is the mentor’s involvement in training/fundraising?
– When does the training begin?
SS: Training begins in 3rd or 4th week of April. I am not sure on the exact date.
– How long are the weekday and weekend sessions?
SS: Every weekday run will involve approx 15-20 min of streching followed 30-40 minutes of run followed by 30 min of strenghening exercises.
– At what point in training does the actual running begin on weekdays?
SS: If your target is half marathon, you will start with 1 mile run for every weekday run. It will go upto to 4 miles per weekday run. Weekend runs are longer runs.
– Can you elaborate on fund raising goals?
SS: For half marathon for first timer, the goal is $1500 this year. Last year, at the begining of the program, I was not sure how would I raise funds. But it was very easy. I just approached executives at my company and was able to meet my target. Most of the companies also have gift-match program.
– What is the mentor’s involvement in training/fundraising?
SS: Based on the weekday group you choose, you will be assigned a mentor. Mentor leads all the streching/strengthening sessions in the weekday runs. For weekend run, coaches lead this effort.
There is no such thing as Free lunch 🙂 You need to commit to raising the minimum $$$ for the charity organization to get trained for marathon (which is free for you along with the health benefits it entails). If you are short of $$$ of your goal – you will have to generally pay from your own pocket. I remember one charity Org (can;t remember the name) taking your credit card # in advance when you sign-up and at the end will charge the diff if you are short.
I highly recommend this training program. Being able to finish a half or full marathon gives you a great sense of accomplishment. You can achieve this while helping the cause of educating under-privileged children in India by joining the Team Asha Marathon Training program.
Did you train for half marathon? where do they train normally? do you recommend weekday/weekend training? got a lot more questions. will talk soon.

What if the fund raising goal is not achieved and how much time do you get to raise the fund ?
Also what happens if you happen to skip any training session for some reason ?

Considering the economy and all the cost cutting measures the goal seems stiff. Guess, will have to operate in Amway mode. 🙂

Believe me, fundraising is not difficult.
