Glimpses of Lassen Volcanic National Park

We are blessed by the variety of national parks in this state, obviously Yosemite is the most visited national park in California, but each other park has something unique to offer.
The flora and fauna of Lassen Volcanic NP have an interesting mix. Waterfalls, Volcanic Activity, Meadows and Peaks – it has everything. Though the waterfalls may not be as grand as Yosemite, they are worth a visit. Parts of the park are closed in winter so spring, summer is the best time to visit this park.

My first camping experience began with this national park and I still remember the super cold labor day weekend nights and the whole camping experience of sleeping bags and tents.
Last year we revisited this park during mid July. Sections of park still had snow and also wildflowers too. Unfortunately the hydrothermal area was still not open due to Snow. Campground however was fully booked along with first come first served sites.

Like other national parks, this park also has multiple entrances. If you are visiting for the first time then both entrances have a BIG visitor center for you to have any questions answered. I always love how helpful the rangers/docents at visitor centers are.

Camping : There are lots of developed and primitive campsites but one needs to plan early if you want to camp. They also have some cabins and both cabins/tents have limited walk in options. Manzanita Campground is very very clean and has good facilities available. The lake is beautiful and has options for kayaking etc. And there are special permits/camping area for bigger groups with some ranger led activity built in.

Lassen Peak : Strenous hike and fully exposed, but gives a very good workout for fitness enthusiasts.

Bumpass Hell : The largest hyrdrothermal area in the park. A boardwalk trail that takes you around, but could open late in summer due to snow conditions.

Mill Creek Falls : Beautiful waterfall, moderate level hike.

Outside Accommodation : There are few campgrounds outside of this park. The nearest towns (Redding, Red Bluff etc) are about an houraway.

And some of the other places that one can visit from LVNP:

1. Burney falls (also known as Niagara of California) is about an hours drive from Manzanita Lake entrance.
2. Subway Caves : A self guided underground trail (on the way to Burney).
3. Shasta Lake/Dam : An hour away. Shasta Dam has guided tours and worth a visit.
4. Whiskeytown lake : They have full moon night kayaking, hope to try some day.
