While you are evaluating what things to keep in consideration or ask them during initial meeting.

While it depends upon what kind of braces one gets, but for the first year we had monthly visits for jaw expansion braces. You could get X-ray etc done this year and start the procedure next year. That way can plan to put in FSA etc.
you can certainly visit couple of them and get estimates. When you call for appointment make sure that initial consultation for estimation is free.
In terms of what to look for, I would suggest a reference would be ideal. If you know of somebody who was treated or is being treated and provides good reference, then nothing can beat that.
