We have all big luggage bags that we keep for India trips. As our family starts to grow, the number of bags also increases. Storing them becomes an issue sometimes.
A few years back, we came to know of places in Mumbai where they will make custom foldable bags for you. We had 6 of them made over the years. And they have been working out pretty good for us. While going to India we take a mix of the standard luggage bags and these foldable ones.
They are sturdy, have wheels and multiples handles to hold. The bag maker also puts a plastic label holder outside the bag in which you can put your destination address whenever you travel. The cost is around 1200 to 1500 Rs per bag, I think. The most important thing is of course that they fold easily and you can store them easily.
There are 2 such shops that we found. If you are interested we can share the details on this post.
Also If I remember correct, Jayesh Gada’s father – Nayan Gada – was the one who introduced us to the concept initially.
Photos of the bag are below:
This is the postit that the bag dealer gave us when he was making our bag. Not sure whether it will be helpful to you.
Yup, these are quite useful. We have also done the 80-100 Rs cheap nylon thela from Dadar and stuffed with boxes. It doesn’t have wheels like this one but works great when you have to bring pure weight and are short of bags. But the one’s mentioned here look fancier compared to the nylon thela and have longer life. The original sample came from Purvi’s parents and then it took few rounds to find a vendor who could make it in Mumbai.
what kind of weight do they hold? and contact details of the shop please.
Please share the contact details. thank you for sharing..
We use similar folding bags and have got rid of all full size box bags.
Its a duffle bag weighs 900 grams can be folded into a small packet that you can just shelf it in your regular closet.
The quality of material and zips is very good. And with luggage restrictions you can stuff the bag to the maximum as bag itself weighs very little.
The only downside is the bag does not have wheels
Bought it from AVI trek store in Matunga Market opposite For Her.
Please share the details of the shop.
We have for the last few years used cartons from Home Depot (Medium size). There are 2 vareities – normal and heavy duty. The normal one is also quite sturdy and lasts at least 2 trips back and forth. they are a couple of bucks each. The medium size is usually enough to hold 50 lbs of weight and clothes (filler). They are not as convenient to use as the bags in this post, but thought I would mention this option here. We usually wrap them in plastic and tie them up with nylon rope – making it easy to lug around :).
@ Paras – these bags have been tested to hold 70 lbs weight.
@ Jaideep – Love boxes 🙂 and use it exactly like you’ve mentioned.
Maybe now next post should be how you pack 🙂
Prashant please do share the details of the store. Thanks for the post.
1) Few years ago (~2010) we got these folding bags made from VIP Store on Station Rd, Next to Seasons stores in Santacruz West.
2)In 2015 we got them made from
