Camping 2012 Discussion

Hello Campers,

Campsites are booked. Kutchvalley-event mailing list will be set with confirmed & expected campers. Most important part of any event is food, which can be difficult at times to decide then campsite location 😉

Let’s open up discussion for this years camping menu. 🙂

For two night camping we have 3 meals & 2 breakfast to take care. Some of the things to consider will be less time spent in food preparation & more time in fun activities.

Sat Lunch – Arrange your own.
Sat Dinner – Open for discussion
Sun Breakfast – Bagels/Crossiants
Sun Lunch – Open for discussion
Sun Dinner – Open for discussion
Mon Breakfast – Bagels/Crossiants

Please start rolling your suggestions/preferences/ideas here.

  1. one suggestion from me was to have all items related to a session in 2-3 boxes and appropriately labeled “Sat Lunch”, “Sun Dinner”, etc. And this includes everything from plates, tissues, raw veggies, cans, spoons, etc, etc. Thus each session is independent of other dependencies. All we need to do is to open those 1-2 boxes related to a session instead of searching for items in every session.

This would mean extra work at someone’s home trying to organize stuff into boxes. But it would make for smooth execution at the campsite itself.

  2. The camping site is near to Modesto and Tracy which have many Indian restaurants. We can ask them if they can cater food.

  3. As much as I respect the idea of avoiding kandmool during camping (no onion, potato and garlic) but my vote is BIG NO. I follow my share of eating Jain food during Payushan and that’s my threshold …..LOL

  4. To be fair to all – I think we should have both Jain as well as non-Jain food – to accommodate all as we have been in earlier years. Camping is not a religious event but a fun entertaining event :):)

  5. Great suggestion Prashant, but no need to meet before for that. I think something similar was implemented last yr at Lopez lake campsite as well, but this year it can be taken to the next step 🙂

  6. Mon Breakfast – bread, butter, peanut butter, jam

  7. I think we should first make a decision whether we want to order the food from outside or we are going to do what we usually do. There is no point in discussing and then finally ordering food from out side.

  8. My 2 cents for food 🙂
Sat Dinner – Usal/Misal (made from home), PB (made from home or catered like last yr)
    Sun Lunch – Theplas
Sun Dinner – Tacos (Tried and tested, both kids and adults like it and works well in a huge group for day 2 of camping)

  9. Vote for Pav Bhaji and Tacos

  10. Here is a list of things to do in Ripon Ca –
    a. The mistlin sports park looks awesome and depending upon the water in stanislaus river that flows through, maybe we can explore it if creek doesn’t have enough water.
    b. http://www.snakemuseum.com – when I saw the heading thought it would be like the snake park in Pune but it seems more like a shop and $2.00 entry sounds like a must visit :-). They also seem to have tours and feeding etc. Worth exploring.

  11. Chole Samosa and Pav Wada ( both the items can be catered)

I’ll second Theplas (all time fav)
with Batata nu Saak , Chundo and Dahi

  12. Sat Dinner- PB catered.
Sun Lunch – Canned garbanzo beans, tortilla and mango juice.
    Sun Dinner-Bhel.

  13. Corn Bhel.
In past we have ordered Roti – Subzi, could just order subzi and get tortilla/frozen roti. with raas
    Burger/Sandwich
    Catered Biryani/Pulav, raita

  14. FYI – Subway sandwiches are @ 4 and 4.5 miles from the park.
Taco Bell also @ 4 miles. And fresh choice at about 8 miles from the camping location.
Mita, were u suggesting making chhole with the garbanzo beans or eat raw?

  15. making chole

  16. Chole Samosa and Batata wada may be a little hard for people who are eating only jain food.
Burger may be a good idea we have not done that to try something new. Double roti may be another option if we order the masala. Tacos is also good since kids and adults like it and also there is less chance of wastage since the items except for sour cream and guacomole are not perishable.

  17. Hello Kutchi Campers,

Please put your suggestions by Thursday May 10 so that the food committee can finalize the menu.

  18. falafel instead of tacos

  19. how about bhel ? If we plan to do bbq, then burger would be a very good idea..

  20. Subway platter could be one of the good options. They might deliver as well.

  21. One more try this year (have been trying for last 10 years but…)

Sun Breakfast – Jalebi, fafda, Mircha,
Sun Lunch – Puran Puri, Aamti
Sun Dinner – Bajri jo Rotla, Gwar nu shaak and Chaas

For Sat dinner and Mon breakfast can have other choices…

  22. Bhavesh We can hire a cook/Maharaj for 3 days 🙂

  23. Bhavesh,
Don’t just keep trying, instead implement it :-).

  24. Bhavesh- Love your menu. If this is the menu i should cancel all my plan :).

  25. I like Bhavini’s suggestion,
    Subway for Sat dinner,
    Taco Bell Sun dinner,
(few guys can go and bring the food to the campsite)
then only breakfast and Sun lunch needs to be planned….

  26. Bijal, I didn’t suggest that 🙂
Folks, Any new places to order theplas ?

  27. I know a lady in Sunnyvale who prepares theplas. We brought them for our alaska trip.
I can ask what she charges. How many do we need.

  28. How about those flavoured (Tomato, Spinach) Tortilla as Thepla replacement? 😉
