  1. The long weekend in May was too cold last year…….I would prefer going camping a bit later, maybe in June or July so it gets a bit warmer and everyone can enjoy sleeping in the tents better!

  2. Looks like we missed the window of oppurtunity for group sites in good campgrounds. So will need to resort to individual campsites as usual.

    Some initial options:

    1) Spring Lake Regional Park, Santa Rosa

Dimple had suggested 2 years back in a thread.

    2) Turlock Lake SRA

(Site specific reservations may not be available)

    3) Arroyo Seco

  3. IMO, the Turlock lake seems better since it is more inland than the others and hopefully it will be warmer in May than the other.

  4. Prashant as you have mention May long weekend is good.

  5. Pinnacles National Monument was suggested by a friend.

Only thing is that their group campsites (accomodating 20 each) are full for that weekend. The normal sites are available but they just allow 6 people per site and 1 car per site.

  6. Narrowing down to Turlock Lake during May long weekend. If there are any concerns please raise them now. Otherwise I will contact 4-5 people tomorrow to help book around 11-12 campsites for May long weekend.

  7. Lake San Antonio – South Shore

South Shore campground individual or group seems suitable for our requirement or else there is North Shore camp grounds too.

    Santa Margarita Lake –

Lopez Lake Recreation Area – has multiple group campsite

  8. Called up Lopez Lake and they have group sites available which can fit our group (80-100).

This small water park is also part of the campground:

(Need to pay extra for waterpark but they have discounts for groups).

Only thing is that this is 200 miles away from Bay Area in the San Luis Obispo Area.

  9. HI,

Does the campsite have cabins that we can rent ? please let us know

    Mona

  10. We would prefer Turlock lake camp sites as May can be colder and being inland temperature for camping would be suitable for all of us.

  11. Looking at the location of Lopez lake, its well inside from the coast. So should not be cold there as well. Some of the reviews are from Memorial day itself.

Keep the discussion going. Can someone find out if Lopez Lake has cabins and post info here.

  12. We recently were in San Louis Obispo and it took us about 5.5 hrs to get back to the city because of the traffic on return during a long weekend.(google map shows 4.32 hrs)

Would prefer Turlock lake for the shorter drive.

Looked up Lopez lake – no cabins……

  13. We visit San Louis Obispo very often and has never taken us more than 3-3.5 hours from South Bay on 101-S

  14. Leaning towards getting the group site, since we’ve never been able to get a group site so far.

  15. Any place warm is fine 😉
    Don’t want hat-trick of cold weather 😀

  16. Vote for Group campsite, since we have been talking about it for long and difficult to get typically. So ready to take the plunge with cold & distance since group campsite is available.
Wrt cold – central valley gets fog from the fields up and gets cold as well. eg. Big tree calaveras park.

  17. Regarding the weather I called up Lopez Lake and asked them typical weather on Memorial Day. They said its warm (not super hot) and not cold at all. Of course no one can predict the weather this year but that has been the overall trend for past years.

  18. Lopez Lake – Del Norte group campsite booked for nights of May 27-May 29 (Fri night-Sun night). It was a 3 night min deal.

After checking and cross checking the lopez lake through various ways, conclusion was that this was doable. We always wanted to do a group campsite to avoid hassle of individual bookings. And the weather seems to be nice here during Memorial Day.

This is the first time that we will be having a water park within the campground. And it promises to be fun with 2 huge waterslides and other attractions. Other activities abound like hiking, boating, kayaking, etc. From multiple reviews it seems there are deers and turkeys on the campground. So fun for kids.

Overall it all makes for a fun fun fun weekend. We will start camping related activities once May starts. 🙂

  19. Luxurious Camping Close to the Bay Area –

Maybe we could try one of these next year 😉
