Weekend Roundup

This could become a weekly feature. :-). Interesting things and news noticed over the weekend.

  • Walmart in Milpitas has stopped issuing plastic bags. You can buy reusuable blue colored environment friendly bags from them for 15 cents each. Its time to start carrying bags in your cars and taking them to stores just like India. Our kids will be more used to this pattern of living. And they will probably express shock when they come to know in the future that once upon a time stores used to give free bags for your purchased goods. 🙂
  • Sanket Malde and Megha Gala are reporting on facebook about Taco Bell in India. Though their viewpoints are totally opposite on the taste, this is an interesting development for India. McDonalds, Subway and now Taco Bell. Is In-N-Out or Burger King next?
  • Navin Dedhia is reporting on KVOSS community on Ning that San Francisco has become the first city to declare Monday as a Vegetarian Day. Read more here

Feel free to add to the Weekend Roundup Column with your own observations. 🙂

  1. If you visit Trader Joes with your own bag, your name is entered into a weekly drawing for cash.

  2. If there is one thing, that Milpitas is missing its Trader Joes.

WE got our own Specialty Sandwiches and our own Bed, Bath and Beyond.

    Maro Milpitas Maange More. :-).

  3. If you take ur own bag to Safeway, they give u 5 or 10 cents credit.

  4. @ Walmart just found out 2 weeks back that they stopped giving bags. Its good to know @ safeway ..thanks Dimple..
Trader joes was suppose to come in Milpitas ……but will have to still wait…

Great mall farmers market is opening back on 2nd May

  5. I take my cloth bags to Grocery Store. The problem that I am facing is that when I buy vegetables I still have to use the small transparent bags for each vegetable. I try to reuse those plastic bags, I take the same plastic bags each time when I go to the store till they are dirty and I cannot use anymore. I wish there were some small cloth bags with a zipper as they use in India. They are are called I think freeze vegetable bags. They are made of net like material, that may be a good idea.

I used to see that in the begining indian stores did not like me giving them a cloth bag because it is a little inconvenient for them. But now with more and more people getting cloth bag they are getting used to it.

The other advantage that I find is when I take the cloth bag I have less number of bags to carry from the parking lot to my home, so my trips from parking lot to home are reduced when it comes to getting the grocery to home.

  6. I also feel Indian stores dont like reuseable bags. Two times I was asked to fill my own reuseable bag becasue I asked counter person to put more thing in empty bag. They tend to put 1-2 items in one bag. Regarding small plastic bag, I have stopped taking them for things like Banana, Zuccunie, Cucmber.

  7. Wow Neelam. You deserve the “Green” Award for your comment on reusing transparent plastic bags for vegetables. I am impressed. Kudos to you, Dimple and other Green KVites.

A inspiration for others and me. 🙂

  8. I havent encountered that problem yet with stores not liking the cloth bag. They will get a nasty look back if I ever receive one :-).

  9. Hi NEelam
you get those net bags in 1 dollar shop in laundry section only thing it is of polyester and in India we use to get of wire…
I got couple of bags last year in sale from walgreens they are of thick cloth, nice and sturdy…..and I use them specially going to costco and few other stores

  10. poonam I am talking about small bags for putting individual vegetable for example beans, ladys finger, chillies . Is that what you are talking about ? If yes tell me which dollar store did u buy?

The other thing that worked for me is to get the cloth bag ( like an organizer , very small bag just to put all the plastic bags. I take that cloth bag so that I do not forget the transperant plastic to reuse that

  11. Yes I am talking @ small mesh bags it may be 10 inches by 5 inches or so.. and has a zip…
one dollar shop on South Park Victoria in Milpitas ….
IF I see again will surely let u know.. sometimes you can find small mesh bags where they have sand toys …

  12. Previous comment was by me and not by Neelam I dont know how ur name came on comment…

  13. The plastic bags that we use for vegetables can be recycled. I keep all the plastic bags separate and there are recycling counters usually outside grocery stores. I always take them back on my trip to safeway!
