I was very excited to see the Imax sign in AMC Mercado-20. I thought Finally an Imax which is accessible. However few days back I read a story about an comedian who went to see star trek in an Imax and came back frustrated that it was not the real Imax experience.
Upon reading the story I found that IMAX rolled out a digital projection system last year that can be easily installed in a normal movieplex and doesn’t require those huge film reels of a traditional IMAX projector. The downside is that the screens of these “Fake IMAX” theaters can be as much as a quarter of the size of standard IMAX screen.
Though I have not seen the Imax at AMC mercado, I think this would be one of the fake Imax variety. So I guess for real Imax experience (with the dome) we will still need to goto San Jose (Tech Museum) or Dublin.
On a different line, How is movie watching in Imax? Does it cause an headache? Experiences ??
Movie watching in an IMAX is amazing, especially for nature related movies.
I have watched couple of documentarty made epscialy for IMAX in Boston IMAX. It was amazing. Haven’t watched any commercial movie. I think headace or no headace will vary from person to person. You will have to watch one to see if u get it 🙂
Check out the IMAX in Grand Canyon and also near Niagara falls (on the canadian side).
The AMC-Imax is a just an extension of the full screen. We saw Madgascar-2 and it was not an IMAX experience (although they charge more than regular ticket). There is one in San jose AMC also.
Yup, the IMAX in Grand Canyon is good. We watched it during our trip. Unfortunately missed out on the Niagara one 🙁
Watched early morning IMAX show at Grand Canyon.
Movie is good but there was not much of IMAX effect.
Felt couple of other documentary I have watched in past had lot more effects.
