Gola – Shaved Ice

I have smitten by the Gola craving here and I already had Gola at 2 places here. I plan to make it at home in USA once I come back.

Now has any of you tried making Gola at home. If so what syrup do you use and which masala do you use? Any tips to make the Gola extra delicious??? If there is any special syrup that you recommend then I can get it from India itself. I am also wondering from where can i get the sticks that they insert into the ice.

  1. u will get the sticks from the golawala at juhu beach.on request they do sell.

  2. Yeah one of our friends make lovely Golas at home in USA. They got rose syrup from India and rest of the syrups(orange, pineapple, strawberry)from Walmart. They top the shaved ice with syrup, condensed milk, dessicated coconut, cashews and khareks…..just like famous Rajkot Golas.
Also you can get Kala Khatta/Orange Syrup from India. You also get Kalakhatta/Lemon Juice Masala in stores in Mumbai.

  3. Thanks Sneha. That is very helpful.

  4. Thankfully due to the arrival of the ice cream man during Spring Picnic we did have something similar to American Gola. :-). All that was missing was a little bit of chat masala.

Come to think of it, we had plenty of ice in Cooler. Only if someone had bought some syrup. Maybe one of the next events. 😉

  5. Over the weekend, we made some Golas at home. We have bought Kala-Khatta and Orange syrup from India. Other ingredients that we put were lemon and some chat masala.

It was hard to make the shaved ice stick together. So we kept the resulting gola in a glass as safety precaution.

Overall it was a delicious Gola for the first attempt. We hope to improve the texture of the gola next time around. Feel free to ask for a Gola next time you visit our home. 🙂

  6. We had made golas last year by using orange syrup from walmart and the ice shaver machine from chinese store. it was good but we missed kala khatta taste
