Since we in the bay area are always looking out for 1-day things to do around the area I thought I will post this article on our trip to Sacramento. It could be a nice 1-day trip if want to go somewhere within 120 miles some weekend.
First of all we went to the Railroad Museum in downtown Sacramento. There are many actual old trains on display. This is an indoors museum. You can get into many of these trains and look around. In fact in one of the trains they simulate the noise as if it is running.
Overall I liked this museum and think its worthwhile to take visitors from India too for this museum. They have scheduled free tours or you can roam around yourself too. Should take around 2 to 2 1/2 hours to finish this attraction.
The Capitol Bldg is another place to visit. It is majestic. You can go inside and tour the bldg. On the bottom floor they have a display dedicated to each county in California.
Here is Santa Clara County.
They also allow you to visit Arnold’s (the governor) office although just the reception area only. Should take around 45 mins to 1 hour to finish the internals. Outside they have a big park and you can walk around casually.
Next attraction is Sutter Fort. Now this is not a “must-see” as such and can be skipped if you dont have the time. It will give you the feel of kutch once you enter this attraction. It was built more than 150 years ago.
Inside you can roam around various rooms that were used for various purposes during that time. Should take around 1 hour to 1 1/2 hour to complete this attraction.
We stayed overnight and on the way back visited the Jelly Belly factory.
If you know of any other attractions in or near Sacramento please update the rest of us via the Comments section. Purvesh recommended the El Dorado National Forest which is a bit north of Sacramento.
The Capitol Bldg also has free guided tour. And I think one should plan to take the tour at Capitol. In Railroad museum there is lot of details written infront of each display. Such information is missing in captiol hence tour will be helpful.
Sutter fort is not our usual assumption of military related fort. It is more like small, secured colony owned by individual.
There is Governor’s Mansion and couple of other museum which sounded interesting. Hopefully next time. There is paid garage parking close to each attraction.
