Google Chrome

Has anyone been able to download this browser successfully ? Both IE and FF gave me errors after clicking on the link to download. I tried this link – http://gears.google.com/chrome/?hl=en.

  1. Try http://www.google.com/chrome

If you have zonealarm installed there are some known problems with installing it.

  2. http://www.google.com/chrome is the right link. Do you use IE 8 beta? Interested in your thoughts for both 🙂

  3. Thanks. That link worked. No I havent used IE8 beta yet. Here’s what I liked about chrome in the few minutes that I browsed using it –
    1) Different tabs are different processes.
    2) Its task manager is pretty neat. Shows you how much memory and cpu intensive each tab is.
    3) Chrome is tab modal and not application modal. So one tab cant lock up the whole browser.
    4) I liked the integration of search in the omnibox (address bar).
    5) A new tab displays the most visited sites instead of a blank page. Not sure whether I love this feature yet due to privacy concerns.
    6) More space is available for the web application since chrome does away with the title bar. The title text shows up in the tabs.
Also there are less menus and very few toolbar buttons.
    7) Chrome is faster for javascript execution. Tried some javascript intensive sites like yahoo mail. It did seem to load faster than IE.

One of the things that didnt work for me was the developer -> javascript console window (equivalent to the firebug extension in firefox) did not dock to the main window for me.
Also where did the status bar disappear ? In FF, I like the shortcut in the status bar to launch firebug. Did not find a similar shortcut for the js console in chrome.

I found it funny that hotmail comes up with an ‘Upgrade your web browser’ message once you login.
I would have loved to try out our web application as well on google chrome. Unfortunately, the user string parsing didnt anticipate this new browser so it displays a non-fancy UI to the user. So I have some work on my hands for the day. 🙂 For the moment, I find myself going back to FF to resume my normal work. Although, chrome would definitely be in the list of browsers for testing the application against.

  4. Aha!:
Chrome is definitely a bet I’m willing to make. The UI is sleek, the techie comic is promising, the home page is actually very useful, and the javascript execution is the most secure/stable than anything else present in the industry (no more memory leaks!).

    Flipside:
Google has made yet another (silent) step to tap into the vast ‘ad-world’ market. Imagine, Chrome will directly be able to gather information on every site you visit, every thing you search for, virtually every word you type (of course within law). Yesterday, they could only get this data from Google.com searches – now they can directly get it from Chrome. Beware of fine print in their privacy notes.

    Yay:
Buy Google shares. IMHO Chrome is going to generate ad revenue that will surpass google.com (on the premise that they also bring it out for linux).

  5. Tested IE8 today. Well, the address bar has certainly improved for one. It also offers auto completion with clear separation of categories – history / favorites / feeds. Unlike chrome, search is still separate from the auto-completion. IE8 also has integrated developer tools which seems similar to the firebug extension. Should make debugging in IE a lot easier. It has includes a new technology called Accelerators which lets you select text on a page and then take action on it like email the text, blog on it or map it. I think the map accelerator may be the most useful. I didnt quite get the concept of web slices. Froogle.google.com didnt come up quite right on IE8. The browser does provide a Compatibility View option which allows one to see sites correctly. I didnt know that Microsoft provides ‘Windows Live Spaces’ which is a blog space for all msn users (there is a menu option that takes you to your blog space). I wasn’t too impressed with it. I was never a big fan of Microsoft web applications. They seem to have very poor design, usability and performance and it hasnt improved at all in these years.

  6. Definitely like the IE8 developer tools better than chrome.
