Monsoon!!

Wow!! I had almost forgotten in 9 years how “Mumbai Baarish” looked. It started raining in Mumbai on 5th and till today the rain has not taken rest. It gets so dark in the middle of the day. It has been only a week since rain has started and already 10% of the season’s rain has fallen.
Kids are also excited and go out in the rain with their small umbrella. Got wet int he first rain. I tell them this is just the beginning, you will have plenty of opportunity to get wet!!

When we were in school, I remember getting all happy as schools used to get closed after the heavy rains. And going out for a walk with my Dad to see how much and where all water has accumulated. And of course going to Lonavala and getting all soaked up in Bushi Dam.

How did our KV family enjoy rain when they grew up in India? Went to some place to enjoy the rain? Or enjoyed special kind of food? Or got stuck somewhere due to heavy rainfall? Or it did not rain as much where you grew up?

  1. I was there in Mumbai during Sept 2007 during which I got a chance to relive Monsoon again. It was just plain NICE. Something different about Mumbai Monsoon.

Yes, i have been to Lonawala during Monsoon couple of times for the Bushy dam trip.

  2. The most enjoyed food was Bhajiyas, Bhutta and Vada Pave (specially on Bushy Dam)

  3. Dont forget the “Hot and Sour” soup.

  4. Amisha, you reminded good old memory. We used to go on terrace and have fun.

  5. I was in Bombay during monsoon of 2001 in July-Aug timeframe.
Have been to couple memorable monsoon hikes.
One of them was in Khandala, which was hiking down to waterfall. It was raining, walking thro’ trail of small stream. Waterfall was not visible until we reached end of the trail and made a turn. And there it was huge, gorgeous waterfall. We could go behind the fall and got more wet. 

Many other fun memories of rain, barely involves food though…
After some function at college due to sudden heavy rain have walked from Vile Parle to our home in Santacruz in saree.
Walked couple of times from school in Khar back to home. When it’s raining heavily, we kind of know that there is going to be no school. Still we will go to school, eat our Tiffin’s and come back. Sometime in knee high water.
Many times while retuning back home, if it is raining, we wont take out our rain gear & will just get wet. Some neighborhood aunty will offer to share her umbrella. 

  6. Dimple are you talking about hiking at Ulhas Valley in Khandala……..its beautiful

  7. WE use to go to Bushi Dam ,Panvel and some different places with KVO bookbank . We use to enjoy vada pav. butter bhuta at five gardens.
We also use to go every august to panchgani to enjoy rains.

  8. Whenever there was no trains or bus due to heavy rain we use to go to kings cirlce to see the accumulated water.

  9. I think it was ’95/’96 , it rained very heavily – 12 to 15 inches in 5-6 hrs or so. It all started around 2 pm. Since morning was very clear life was as usual. I also went to work in Masjid Bunder near VT. Trains were shut down by 4 so along with coworkers I started walking towards Colaba hoping to catch a bus to Ghatkopar from the starting point. It took us couple of hrs to reach there. Luckily, I was able to get a spot to stand in the bus at about 7pm. At around 11pm we reached at Hindmata, area that gets flooded even with little rain! Even the bus started to sway. Everyone was afraid that it will topple. It was then announced that bus will not go beyond Dadar TT due to flooding at King’s Circle. I was lucky that my Mom’s place was in Dadar. So I got down at Hindmata along with two other girls who agreed to stay at my mom’s place. I did not know these girls. So we walked in chest high water for about another half an hour. It was so dead silent and pitch dark on the inside road…rally scary. Finally we rached home at 12 and everyone at home was hanging in the balcony waiting for me…Oh yes…no cell phones then:)

It was quite a memorable experience,

  10. The most heavy rains I have seen in Mumbai till date were the ones on 26 July 2005, the whole city was stranded somewhere or the other for atleast one night, some like me were out of the house for 2 nights. I stayed back in office (Polaris in SEEPZ, Andheri) one night, and second night I spent at my brother’s hostel. He was doing a master’s course at NITIE Powaii (near Vihar lake). In SEEPZ, Andheri, I remember Tata Consultancy Services office’s ground floor was flooded, and all their systems on that floor were to be shut down.
