Yesterday I was remembering the times when “half Bread” was available at the local store. The shopkeeper would cut the bread pack in half if you just wanted half. Then i remembered the time when the bus ticket was 20 paise (the hexagonal 20 paise).
What other nostalgic things do you remember from long long time ago?
I remember I used to manage to buy return ticket from Matunga to VT, film ticket at Sterling and a popcorn – all for just Rs.20/-
BTW official Half bread pack is still available in stores.
Glass of Neera for 25paise.
3-4 girls sharing rickshaw to school in 50 paise/each.
Vada Pav outside swimming pool for 50 paise.
Me (half ticket) & my cousine (full ticket) used to eat milk popcicle after school from his bus money & manage to go back home in 2 half ticket.
Not buying bus ticket from Sion to Matunga as the bus was always so full that by the time conductor could reach you your stop was already there….
Having cousins over in vacation and in Rs20 a gang of 6-8 people would snack on Ragda Pattice n Pani Puri opposite premier school matunga and be so happy with the treat……….
25 paise pepsicolas in summer……
and renting cycles for Rs2 per hour…
Bhopu cyclewalla would sell 5 idlis for 1 rupee
Goda gaddi rides and Camel rides at Juhu beach for 3-5 rupees
When everyone was on penny budgets in college order one pav bhaji and one plate chopped onions that would just double the size of bhaji
and of course not to mention gas was less than $2 in 2004 when I came to USA……
and box of Kesar was $14 then
I remember giving bday treat dinner to a group of about 6-7 friends which would cost around 300rs only.
Renting bicycles was fun. Used to do it during summer vacation. Was around 2Rs per hour. Bicycles had numbers. There was often a little bit of waiting for the good ones.
Hmmm… I had specifically told Bhopuji to sell them for Rs 1.50. And why is the cyclewallah selling idlis anyway? 🙂
I do remember Ice Gola staring from 25 ps and max to be Re 1 just outside our school. BEST minimum fare Rs2. 20 marbles for Re 1. Kites for 25 ps. MRI Rubber ball for Rs 6…
In my time the red rubber ball was 3Rs and i remember at school we used to share the cost of a new ball and it came down to 25 paise per child.
We used to play abba-dubbi and football (yes with the smaller red rubber ball).
Bus ticket from Bandra station to Fr. Agnel started out at 75 paise in 1st year and went up to 2.25 by Final year.
King Cone at the Vadilal Shop outside Fr. Agnel used to be Rs 3 went to Rs 8.
25 paise pepsicola when walking back from Multipurpose clases (50p for the milk ones)
Tutti-Fruiti icecream for Rs1.25 which u got if u answered Shah Sir’s (Prashant’s dad’s pop quiz correctly).
Bicycles rental for 50p 1/2 hour. Filing Air in tyres used to be 25p for both tyres. We just filled air in Bhumi’s and Keya’s bike and paid Rs 2 a bike.
$0.99 Gas in Virginia in 1998
Bas karo Gaon Walo… Bas karo
Mein aur bardash nahin kar sakta
renting bicycles was a lot of fun. We asked one store in Mulund, do you rent cycles? He answered “There is no place to ride them, and all open space available in buildings has been converted to car parking”.
Kalakhatta pepsicola, jeera goli (10p/packet) all outside my school
BTW last comment was mine.
Well, the prices posted by people here is a good measure to find out their ages 🙂
Indira Gandhi passed away on the day we got TV reception. For the next five days I hated her for dying as doordarshan broadcast only “Akhil Bhartiya Shastriya Sangeet Kaaryakram”.
I remember enjoying daily disciplined activities in RSS shakhas like PT, stick fighting, rope climbing, etc. Those were simpler times. Boy, do I hate RSS now.
Jeegar, Gaon ke bahar Badi Tanki padi hai (tower par). Upar chad kar, haath mein bottle le kar, phir chilla. 🙂
Sunday mornings was only time to watch cartoons and ek movie on dordarshan at 5pm and Vikran aur Vetal at 4.00pm…..
And all streets would be empty when Ramayan or Mahabharat would screen……….
Chaya geet on Wednesday 8.00pm and of course Karamchand and Wagle ki Duniyas were most awaited for during the week….
Renting video in Summer vacations and having a marathon of movies…..
This proves Sneha is younger than me.:-). Sunday morning was Saptahiki (trailor of what is going to come in coming week on DD). Thurs was orig. time slot was chhayageet. Later National TV started and Chitrahaar became available on Wed and Fri, I think.
Saptahiki used to do the work of generating water cooler talks and buzz about the upcoming programs.
When TV went 24 hours, I remember being amazed that there could be so much content to dish out. In fact when the Metro channel started (to give option of 2 channels) for half day on Sats that used to be a big thing. Fraggle Rock was the one of the first program on Sat Metro.
And dont forget Santakukddi. UGC (Univ Grants Commission) educational programs used to be the only morning TV available on weekdays.
awesome topic prashant…
we all friends used to watch moogli and liked characters so much that we still call some guys as moogli, bagira, bhalu, bhedia etc. it was just awesome..
50 paise vada paav in school canteen and we used to buy for garlic chutney.it was so great that when we friends met after 10-12 years at school,we could smell garlic chutney today.no kidding..btw i studied where indira gandhi, morarji desai studied and my school completed 100 years.(M MM Pupils own school)
(i just been to mumbai so many more such memories)
Anyone remember “Phoool khile hai Gulshan Gulshan” which was a pre-cursor to all the talk shows about film personalities.
On Saturday – Marathi Movie – mostly Nilu phule’s movie. Occasionaly they would show Gujju movie
Hey Nirav…. ur too from M M Pupils 🙂
Now KV has 3 pupilite – Ajay , Nirav & Dimple 🙂
I rem – we – 5/6 guys getting together contibuting 1/2 rs & renting DVDs for 10rs for 3 hrs.. seen many ramseys movies like poorani haveli, khooi panja, lal darwaja n like 🙂
I remember “Tabassum” from “Phool Khile hai ..”. Haven’t heard about her or seen her since then.
“Thanlat Batmya” in the evening in marathi, “Ranjni” on sundays on DD. There used to be very good marathi serials also on DD (like Chimanrao”). Used to watch few but don’t remember names.
I remember eagerly awaiting Spiderman at 5 pm on Sundays and ofcourse was a big Star Trek Fan which aired early Sunday morning.
He-Man and Giant Robot (???) were also among the favorites.
Did not like the ‘Aamchi Mati Aamchi Mansa’ which used to air early evenings and wonder why doordarshan couldnt provide more entertainment.
I remember when phones (landline) werent so commonplace in India. When we got our phone conn, we used to get calls for all our neighbours as well. And ofcourse, the wrong numbers and cross connections were very entertaining. And now look at the difference. Even a kid carries a cell phone.
And chotta chetan first hindi 3-D movie was tax free……Rs 3 a ticket…..
Best post of the year!
Yaadein…Yaadein…
1. Going to pictures (movies) was a BIG deal. Before going to a movie I would inform all my friends. The next day friends would be waiting to hear from you the story and telling the movie story in great detail was even more fun than the movie itself.
I remember also that to watch movies during Ganpati and Navratri festival we would go to common showing for all which means the movies were shown on the road….like the Swades movie when Sharukh shows movie to the masses….
Now the movies are shown on each channel and all…..Movies kee to koi value eech nahi hai…
2. Star-Trek was a great show which we never missed. Also we made flip wireless devices (pre-cursor to our cell phone) used in Star-Trek using “Ship Match Boxes” and a few rubber bands.
3. The show “Show-Time” following Star-trek was nice. This show would have a topic each week and on that topic relevant movie clips would be shown. We would be guessing which clips would be shown and one was happy when your guess was correct.
4. The hawker outside the school was a great place to be after school. The khata-meeta chat, aam-papad, green varyari, raw-mongoes with salt and mirchi…ummmhhmmmm….Yaad aatein hee moo mein pani aagaya…
There is Only One Way to Stop Time and it is to Freeze Time with Memories…
May be we’ll return to this post after 5,10,20 years….
