Sanedo, Navratri Garba, etc

This past weekend we had the chance to go for GCA Garba in Hayward on both Sat and Sun. Friday’s band was by Sharvari Dixit and was good. Sat’s band was by the Purao family (or something like that). Sat’s band was also good and better than Fri’s band. On Sat after the kids chook chook gadi they played the “Sanedo”. They introduced the Sanedo as something similar to the Kids Chook Chook Gadi for Adults.

Now we had no idea what a Sanedo is. Fortunately Nitul was there. :-). And he explained that the Sanedo is the latest trend in Marriage Sangeet parties and Navratri in India. In fact Sanedo has its wikipedia page too.

From the wikipedia

“Original pronunciation and word is Snehdo(Gujarati: સ્નેહડો), derived from the word Sneh(Gujarati: સ્નેહ), meaning love or affection. Sanedo contains couplets of four lines and has striking resemblance to Bhavai, a folk drama from Gujarat. Gujarati folk artist Arvind Barot performed Sanedo on stages in 1980s and deserves credit for bringing Sanedo to mainstream, but it was due to another Gujarati folk artist, Maniraj Barot, that Sanedo is famous among all Gujarati people and being played at Navaratri and many wedding parties. Sanedo’s topic can be anything from romance, youth or satire.”

It felt good to do something different. Sanedo was a big hit with the crowd on SAT and they made the band do a “Once more” two times. Check out this clip from youtube. Basically it alternates between fast and slow. When its slow everyone sits down. and as soon as the song changes pace everyone jumps up and moves in a circle. Youtube has several such videos.

Audio of Sanedo available at :

Overall the KV attendance on Fri and Sat was a bit less compared to usual. But it was GREAT FUN nonetheless. On Friday the KV group did not dance as much. But on SAT, the group went all out and had a ball of a time. Hiten/Ami showed us some new steps as well.

Overall the weekend Navratri was a good one. Click here to see the photos from Friday. Unfortunately noone brought a camera on the Dancy Saturday.

  1. Dear,Friend
    `Nav` means `nine` and `ratri` means `night`, thus, `Navratri` means `nine

nights`. Thereare many legends attached to the conception of Navratri like all Indian

festivals but all of them are related to Goddess Shakti (Hindu Mother Goddess) and

her various forms. Though it is one of the most celebrated festivals of Hindu

calendar, it holds special significance for Gujratis and Bengalis and one can see it in

the zeal and fervor of the people with which they indulge in the festive activities of

    the season.
