If you are tired of going to Banana Leaf in Milpitas, but still want to eat Malaysian food, then there’s a good place for Malaysian food for folks in Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Cupertino etc.
Layang Layang is a small, but a hustle bustle restaurant on De-Anza blvd close to 85. It’s a stand alone structure with no other restaurant or any other shop besides it. The ambience is great and festive. The wait was 15-20 minutes on a Friday evening, but service was extremely fast after we got the table. Food was little on the milder side compared to Banana leaf (BL) , but the taste/menu was similar to BL. The roti Canai was served within few minutes of ordering. They also had outdoor seating with heater’s outside.
Since it’s a small place the tables are close to each other, guess they always want to maximize their profits :). Little outside the normal route of travel but definitely worth a visit.
Located At:
1480 S De Anza Blvd
San Jose, CA 95129

Another place which is similar to Banana Leaf is
Coconut Grove
(408) 263-1882
129 Great Mall Dr, Milpitas, CA 95035
This is place is right at the entrance of great mall which faces century theater. Comparatively quiter then BL. Service & food was satisfactory.
‘Spice Island’ opposite USPS on Villa St in Mountain View is another Malaysian restaurant. Food is good and spicy. They serve one of the best pineapple fried rice around (me thinx). Service can be a little slow since they run some lean operation here. The place is not as noisy as Banana Leaf so the ability to scream is not a prerequisite to have a conversation. Like all the other south-east asian places this place seemed particularly popular among our fellow deshwasis.
