Attributes of a Kutchi

If you were to define what an average kutchi stands for what would it be? The
kutchi community is very close knit with many kutchis knowing each other.
A community is defined by having a group of people having some common attributes and interests. What are some of the common factors binding us?

Thinking of it in another way, if you meet a new kutchi what are some of the attributes that you think most likely will be present in that person. (Of course whether that person has it or not will be another matter, but you set your expectations based on your subconscious ideas about the average kutchi).

For example :
An average kutchi usually :
– is a vegeterian
– does not usually smoke.
– speaks kutchi

I have more but will wait for others to respond first….

Kisnay kaha “Main haara, to yeh mera mama”. Aur khel khel mein ek rishtaa daav par lag gaya.

Ek woh pattay ka khel tha (shakuni wala) jismay rishtaa toot gaya aur ek yeh khel tha jismay rishtaa jud gaya….. (aur bhanjaa ronay lagaa)

  10. 1. Does not drink beer/wine, rather kutchi beer (chhaas) is more favored
    2. The community overall is less religious (compared to the other jain communities)
    3. Socially active – Keep thinking about ways to get more community involvement in areas other than religion (social groups, mahila mandal, youth groups etc)

  11. Non-confrontational : not that willing to pick up a fight (with strangers). Usually of the mind to let it go.

Non-military type: Do you know of any kutchi in the military? Because of above, military becomes automatically out.

Non higher studies oriented: We here in the US are exceptions. But generally most kutchis are not that higher-education oriented.

Non-cunning: Most kutchis do not play cunning games in the big bad world. The ability and desire to cheat others is less and that is a good thing. πŸ™‚

  12. A very important attribute…..
originally most likely every kutchi’s family business would be realted to anaj……….mostly people were vyaparis…
I remember attending a bahuman samaro in early 1990’s of kutchis who were involved in successful business other than grains…few to name were Anchor, Gala Springs, etc…but only handful of those businesses were present then

  13. 1> Kutchi women donot put Sindhoor on the head.
2> Every Kutchi women will have a Red Gharchodo.
3> Men wearing Saafa during the wedding occasion.
4> Again women will definately have a bandhani saree with them.

  14. All Kutchi parents and grand parents are interested in knowing your vado nalo (family name which includes grandfather-great grandfather or vakahar jo nalo- famliy business name)

  15. It can only happen in Mulund (so called mini kutch)..

I was in the Kalidas swim center changing room with Bhumi and Keya. We were talking in Kutchi among ourselves. There was 7-8 years old girl standing next to us. She was watching us for some time and then she asked in kutchi ” Are you Kutchi?” I said yes. Again after some time she asked in “Which village in Kutch?” I was amused to here this question from 7-8 yr old girl. πŸ™‚
I also asked her the same question and she answered “Navavas”. To this Bhumi said “Mama I don’t know which village in kutch we are from.”

Seems like her parents taught her to be kutchi in true sense πŸ™‚

  16. It can happen in US also.

Remember the movie (i don;t know the name) where in there was salman khan’s double role and they meet in the Restroom while releiving themselves.

Similar thing – we used to know a kutchi – Lohana family 7 years back – met them in a Resturant while we were speaking in kutchhi and they came over and introduced themselves. Lost touch with them for last 5 years or so and then like the salman khan’s movie met him during last christmas break while in Fremont Lowe’s Restroom when i was speaking with Arya in Kutchi and my friend was curious as to who was speaking in kutchi tapped asking who was speaking in kutchi πŸ™‚

  17. Moral of the story is “Speak in Kutchi while near restrooms and changing rooms even though you may not be speaking much Kutchi elsewhere” πŸ™‚

You will expand your kutchi circle and as a bonus get some sindhi friends too. πŸ˜‰

  18. Generally Speak in kutchi when you do not want anyone else to know what you are talking about πŸ™‚
You would think what are the chances about any other person understanding Kutchi at least in US.

But, apart from teh restrooms and changing rooms, there used to be a Desi Grocery store (Fremont Bazar or something – it is closed now) in the Krishna Restuarant complex. Me and Mita were talking in kutchi about the ridiculous prices they had in kutchi for vegetables but guess what the shop owner turned out to be a Kutchi-Memon.

  19. That’s how we met another KVite in Bay Area!

We were waiting in line at ICC in Sunnyvale and heard someone talking in Kutchi. Based on their accent, I told Sanjay they are not just any Kutchi, they are same as us:) We went to them, introduced each other and after Sanjay told them their name, they say – “oh you are Sanjay Gala. We have your ph #” Turns out they were referring to S1.

The couple we met was Sneha & Amit. They had just moved from Boston a week ago.

  20. Anybody talking louder in public place will be kutchii…..Kutchi people are famous for doing medava….Two person standing close to each other talking loudly one can easliy guess he is a kutchhi.

  21. What is commendable is that Amisha remembered about this post, dug it out and correctly posted her experience on this old post.

We need more contributors like Amisha for sure !!! Amisha, dont hold back your writer instincts. πŸ™‚

  22. Actually Samir dug this old post for me. I told him I wanted to share my experience with KV family !!

  23. Based on the poll, this post should be updated to include “a typical Kutchi Has the Thought to Exercise but not the Will” or “Lazy to exercise”. πŸ™‚
